6 to 12 months in Asia, need help choosing.
I'm looking for:

1. Live on a budget of $1,800 or less a month.
2. Easy Bangs
3. Access to Internet (work, university, social)
4. Learn a new language.
5. Have access to merchandise for sourcing into other countries.
6. Kickboxing training

I have been to (Malaysia,Singapore, Philippines, Hong Kong & Thailand) But this time I'm thinking either Thailand(Chiang Mai) or China (Beijing) which is best?

Never been to China but Thailand ticks all the boxes. CM is quite boring though I find. Lack of nightlife options especially during the week compared to the might BKK.

Yeah I spent 1 week in CM in 2011 and it was completely dead at night, I didn't get a chance to truly explore the city though, It seems quite impossible to really spend money in Chiang Mai, there's not much to spend it in after all?

Beijing though.. well that's a whole other monster, i'm just not sure if $1,800 a month will be sufficient to live there and do what I want.

Why not Bangkok? You can live there on your budget though you won't be going living like a rockstar and will need to watch your budget.

Do you have any information about foreigner friendly month to month apartment rentals?

There's already a thread on here where I posted some websites for apartments.

You can afford an apt and decent food in Beijing for 1800 per month, but (1) the pollution is seriously out of control, even by Chinese standards, and (2) I haven't seen any kickboxing at all in China (only based on BJ, SH and SZ). The rest is all doable, but China definitely is more expensive in big cities than Thailand. I do find Chinese girls more attractive (well, more attractive girls are around) then Thailand, though with a harder edge. Vietnamese women are more attractive in general, more feminine and the country is cheaper than almost anywhere I've ever been.

You can get properly reasonable apartments for about 8000 baht in a month in bangkok. Check out tee-pak it's the best website i'v seen on rental in bangkok. I reckon if you had a thai speaking friend you could just go up to any apartment building and ask around. I'v got 3 in mind already, all have free internet, access to gyms and are no more than 300 metres from a BTS. Just need to make sure they are guest friendly and your set.
While using tee-pak just click on one of the recommended areas preferably near a bts and up pops a map giving you a birds eye view of all rental apartments.

Hook a brother up. What are the names of the apartments and what BTS stops? They sound good.

You're right about getting a Thai to go with you and look at random apartments, did that around Victory Monument and Ratchathewi BTS last time, got shown around almost everyone we went into no problem. The only thing is the staff didn't speak English in a lot of them which could lead to problems

I 'v written them down at home but am not there but there are good apartments at victory, at a BTS called saphin taksin i think. Theres a few decent looking places from that bts all the way up in the nana direction for 3 stops withing 300 metres of them.

Thailand, although it's getting more expensive these days.

When I was last there I was getting 75 baht to the £, these days only 45.

I found alcohol to be a big expenditure in Thailand, you can save a lot of cash by buying your booze at 7/11 and hanging out on the beach with friends
